I called up Greg (one of my sources for years on the retail beat at the N&O) in July 2004 and asked for an interview for a "Tar Heel of the Week" story, a weekly personality profile feature at the paper. I'd never really met the guy in person; I'd just talked to him over the phone and seen him around town. The interview turned into lunch (at Caffe Luna). And then an invitation to a rooftop party at the Alexander Building downtown. And then, well, the rest is history. I switched beats at the paper ... and now we're getting married!
